Further down the Great Ocean Road, we decided to take a detour towards the Camp Otway Lightstation. We didn’t make it all the way down to it because we noticed a bunch of people standing under a tree. We pulled off the road, grabbed our cameras, and found out what the fuss was about – there were koalas in the trees.
Ironically, we took a hike the day before to see koalas in “Koala Country” at Anakie Gorge and saw only one. After driving just a bit down this road, we ended up seeing around 11. This is one of them, holding on to its favorite spot on the branch.

I have seen many sand castles in my lifetime, and even created a few simple ones (we’re talking back in the 80′s with the little pails that came with happy meals from McDonalds). But that’s beside the point. This sand castle was more than just someone shaping the sand. They managed to collect all of the random, unique, and beautiful items from the beach and put them together to create a little castle wonderland.

This is another shot from Australia. If I had it over again, I would have learned about HDR before going on that trip, but I think despite that I still got some lovely compositions, including this one before sunset.

Jim is a friendly lad that Jason and I got the pleasure of meeting at Maru Animal Park in Australia. He was getting ready for a morning nap (because koalas like to sleep for about 22 hours a day), but he perked up just a bit when we got to get up close and personal with him.
After we finished petting him, I stuck my camera underneath the branch he was resting on to get a closeup. And yes, they’re just as cuddly and cute in person as you would imagine they would be.

One thing that I liked about Australia was the familiar feeling of the countryside. Some parts reminded me of driving through rural Mississippi. And then there were scenes like this one that just made me have to jump out on the side of the road to capture the moment.

Today’s shot is one I consider a bit abstract in the sense that there isn’t a lot of “reference” to the overall scene and location. It was taken near the London Bridge along the Great Ocean Road in Australia. You couldn’t actually get to the beach, which is probably why it was so pristine and beautiful. I just loved watching the waves rush onto the beach.

I always feel that starting the week with something cute is a great way to go, so here is a photo from one of my favorite moments in Australia – getting up close to a baby koala!
