Phoenix Photowalk Lesson #3 – Look Up

by Kristi Hines · Arizona, HDR, Phoenix

For the final part of the series lessons learned during my first photowalk in downtown Phoenix, a great thing to remember when shooting with a large group is to look up. If you notice everyone is aiming straight ahead or down, then you need to take advantage of all of the things that are above the fold.

Now I will tell you that my tripod was not built to handle this well, and I found myself in some awkward positions. The following (another in the interesting green-lit alleyway) required me to get on the ground between a SUV and a dumpster. It was well worth it in the end for this spooky shot.

Processing: Adobe Lightroom 3, Photomatix Pro 4

Awesome photos. Kristi.

I now have to do some photo walks too. I specifically like the second one. It shows two very different colors. Green and red usually don’t mix very well. You did a great job. I would crop the photo and get rid of the bottom glass window to make it more concentrate on the stair. Just my 2 cents.

Keep it coming … I will be watching you. :)

Thanks Terence, and good idea! I’m actually planning on going back and re-shooting that one, so I’ll do a bit of a different focus. :)

The second one really jumps out at me as well. I really like the differing white balances between the alley and the background. I do agree about the crop to remove the glass elements at the bottom.

Thanks Scott! I’ll have to go back and re-shoot this one to get more of the sky and less window next time. :)

Wonderful shot! I wonder what’s going on near the top of the building in the background? It looks mysterious.

It did look creepy in the background which was why I loved it! :)
