Cute Baby Ducklings

by Kristi Hines on April 11, 2011 · Arizona, Tempe

This weekend, I managed to photograph some really cute chicks. Baby ducklings, that is.

Baby Ducklings on the Water

Before they made it to the lake, the ducklings had to make it past their first obstacle – a menacingly high curb. This I felt was best suited for video.

After they found an easier way to get to the lake, they made it to the other side and huddled up under their mother for warmth, as it was a particularly chilly and rainy day.

The video is beyond priceless! I was rooting for those last 2, the mom was super cool to backtrack :) – Pictures are great too. Mallards are common ducks and are often overlooked but are beautiful birds… I love the blue patch in their wings.

Thanks Steve! There was quite an audience for them after a bit, and we were all rooting for the last two. I was wondering how the mother was going to handle it – it was nice seeing them all come back over so none were left behind!

I don’t think I have ever seen them all huddled up like that. It was unusually cold and rainy that morning though, so it made sense that they wanted to hide for a bit!

The are so cute! You don’t see this happening often. They are awesome photos and video. I like the new DSLR that can also take HD video.

I was practicing golf at local golf course and suddenly ducks came out of now where. The ducks on the Golf course.

I’ve seen my fair share of ducklings, but never had my camera ready for them. My Nikon D3000 doesn’t have video built in – I used a Kodak Playsport for this – it records 720p at 60fps or 1080p with pretty good clarity during the day or when there’s good lighting.

Nice post sweetie. I love the mist on the second one, it really brings the ducks to life in the foreground :) .

Thanks Jean! Oddly enough, it was at the Phoenix Zoo. Nothing like going to see a variety of wildlife and finding the ones just randomly wandering through the area as the most interesting.

All of the spectators were rooting for them, quietly at least as not to scare them away. It warmed my heart to see them all come back over just for the one that couldn’t make it! :)

Wow Kristi! Exceptional framing of the ducks. Perfect focus. I also like how the picture makes you want to “look to the right” to see what they are looking at.
